Mikky Ekko - odd spelling, fine music. Photo: Dallas Gilliam
Back in his adopted home town of Nashville, Mikky Ekko (it’s a guy, not a band) is gaining attention as one of the music-rich city’s fastest rising talents. And on the recent Ten Out of Tenn tour – a musical caravan of talents from that city (and one of the best live shows I’ve seen all year), Ekko was a standout among the many fine acts on stage.
Earlier this summer, our Nashville examiner wrote a fine introduction of the singer/songwriter, who played his first show in that city about a year ago, having moved there from Mississippi. As the Digital Music Examiner, I’d like to add to the growing chorus of praise for Ekko, whose beautiful voice and passionate stage presence is reminiscent of the late, great Jeff Buckley. Rugged, scruffy good looks (if Jude Law had a rockin' younger brother…) don’t hurt, either.
Ekko has released one CD so far, an independent five-track EP called “Strange Fruit.” You can stream the songs from his myspace page or you can download them all for free by sharing the eddresses of five friends (it’s not spam if it’s supporting good music, and the site promises not to use the info for any other purpose). If you prefer, you can buy the music instead, using the Radiohead “pay what you wish” model.
It’s a system that Ekko’s fellow Nashvillian, Andrew Belle, used to great effect to promote his “All The Pretty Lights” EP. While you’re at it, grab that one, too.
