The FDA and MuscleMaster.com, Inc. notified consumers and healthcare professionals this week of the voluntary nationwide recall of seventeen dietary supplements. The recall involves all lots and expiration dates of products that were sold between June 1, 2009 and November 17, 2009.
FDA informed MuscleMaster.com that it believes that the recalled products contain ingredients that are steroids. It is illegal to sell steroids as dietary supplements and the FDA is concerned that the products may present a safety risk to consumers who ingest them.
Most consumers associate steroid use with the negative publicity of top athletes who have tested positive for these substances that are banned by most sports. However, there are serious harmful effects of using steroid-containing products including acute liver injury. Steroids may cause other serious long-term adverse health consequences in men, women, and children. These include shrinkage of the testes and male infertility, masculinization of women, breast enlargement in males, short stature in children, a higher predilection to misuse other drugs and alcohol, adverse effects on blood lipid levels, and increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.
Customers who have these products in their possession should stop using them immediately and contact their physician if they have experienced any problems that may be related to using one or more of the products.
This recall comes just two months after BodyBuilding.com announced a voluntary recall of 65 products that the FDA believes should be classified as steroids.

With the Olympics just weeks away, it is likely that the FDA is hoping for additional publicity and awareness for these recalls; thus sending a message to consumers and industry alike that tainted supplements will not be tolerated.
