The Artificial sweetner debate

Chicago Diets Examiner
And the debate rages on… I just read a great article in the New York Times about the numerous amounts of artificial sweeteners on the market. Cleverly entitled Showdown at the Coffee House, the article explores old and new artificial sweeteners and their roots in the American diet. I liked it and wanted to share it because it really wasn’t biased in one direction. While I believe that an edible substance with the word artificial in it is not the best thing you could put in your body, there are no concrete studies stating that artificial sweeteners are deadly or harmful as some think.
This is a hot issue in nutrition right now and one I admittedly do not know what to do with. I am a loyal stevia and truvia user, (naturally derived sweeteners from a plant) but I am still unable to resist a Diet Pepsi or sugar-free Jell-o pudding at times. For those of us who believe in keeping a low sugar diet, sweeteners have become seemingly essential. They give us the ability to have our cake and eat it, too, but at what cost to our health? That question remains unanswered.
My advice is to do your own research and make sure the sources are credible and unbiased.
Here is a very informative article that goes into great detail about the content, sources and uses for almost every sweetener in our food and on the market. It is very dense, but full of fantastic information. Happy reading!

What is scary is that you can kill household ants with the yellow packet. Accidentally discovered as a sweetener, it was originally being created as a new incesticide. Strange how the NY Times article never mentioned Agave Nectar Syrup though, we'll be hearing more about that in the near future. Thank you for the good read!
