Weight lifting benefits older women

A study reported in this week's Science Times found that older women who strength trained one to two hours each week were more effective at planning, executing tasks, selective attention and conflict resolution a year later. 

 

Teresa Liu Ambrose, PhD and researchers in British Columbia randomly assigned women aged 65 to 75 to a once or twice-weekly resistance training group or to a twice-weekly balance and toning training group.  Both resistance training groups improved their performance on tasks of executive function compared to the balance and toning group. 

Numersous studies have shown that weight training for the elderly, even those well into their 80's and 90's, can have a significant impact on strength, flexibility, cardiovascular function, bone density and feelings of well being in a relatively short period of time.  And it's never too late to start!  Read more
