This morning on The View, Alicia Silverstone, the actress most famous for her roles as “Cher” in Clueless and Batgirl from Batman and Robin, introduced her new vegan cookbook called “The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet.”
Alicia’s book advocates a vegan, organic style of eating not only for health reasons, but also as a method for conserving resources.
Because she acknowledges that everyone is not ready to cut out meat, fish, and dairy products “cold turkey” (forgive the pun), she gives suggestions in three phases:
- Flirts: tips for those who want to “test the waters” of the vegan lifestyle. Alicia gives ideas on how to swap plant-based foods for meat and shows how even small changes can make a big difference.
- Vegans: the second stage moves toward completely forgoing animal products, but makes the transition more simple by allowing convenience vegetarian-based foods.
- Superhero: the final stage moves the dieter into a full macrobiotic style of diet, which includes more fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. There is also an emphasis on sea vegetables, which are relatively uncommon in the standard American diet.
Ms. Silverstone has been a vegan for more than 11 years, and was voted “Sexiest Vegetarian” in 2004. She states the benefits of her diet go beyond simple weight loss, but has noticed improvements to her skin, digestion, and energy levels.
Diets In Review had this to say about The Kind Diet:
Overall, The Kind Diet seems to be a great tool for those interested in adopting a completely plant-based or vegan diet. The book allows you to slowly become a vegan instead of switching over all at once. This book also provides a great deal of information on which foods to eat and how to prepare them. There’s also information on doing your part to save the planet and the animals on the planet. Alicia Silverstone has taken a subject she’s passionate about and shared it with the world. If you are considering becoming vegan, The Kind Diet is worth looking into.
The book is due to be released October 19. 2009.

Comments
I look forward to reading this book. The content I have read about it so far suggests it is accurate, according to my studies the past six months. Veganism is crucial for our society, both enivoronmentally and ethically. And those who are more concerned about health and looks will benefit as well. Since becoming vegan, my life has become enriched considerably. Given that factory farming is the leading cause of global warming -- and all the health problem tied to excess protein, hormones, and antibiotics -- veganism should be a no brainer going forward.
