The Red Wings calendar didn't list any promotional giveaways on Saturday night but that didn't stop them from giving away a win to the Colorado Avalanche.

Milan Hejduk scored the game-winner in the shootout to complete a 4-3 come from behind win, after trailing 2-0 after two periods.

Cody McLeod scored his second goal of the third period with 2:32 left capitalizing on a bad line change by Detroit. He had scored Colorado's first goal midway through the period on a giveaway by Detroit to spark the comeback.

Eighteen-year old rookie Matt Duchene scored his first NHL goal snapping a shot past Brad Stuart who screened Chris Osgood who was beat on the far side to even the score at two.

"(Brett) Clark made a great play to intercept the puck and he threw it up the wall, and I was able to curl and pick it up and make a move around I think it was Abdlekader and went on the right side and Stuart kind of gave me a little bit of a screen to shoot through and I just tried to get it as hard as I could to the far side of the net and it found a hole," said Duchene of the play on his first goal. "Osgood I don't think saw it just cause of the screen. A lot of goals are scored like that, through screens, so it was fortunate, and it was a big goal at the time, and it probably feels 50% better now that we got the win.

"It's pretty cool, obviously I wasn't able to score in Toronto or Montreal, I have a lot of family in Toronto and Montreal was another of my favourite teams growing up, but to get it against Detroit, our arch-rivals is pretty cool, and getting it in this historic building where so many great players have played and so many battles have been fought between these two teams is pretty cool."

Valtteri Filppula regained the lead for Detroit less than two minutes after Duchene's goal as he followed up the rush by Jason Williams and chipped a loose puck into the wide open net as Craig Anderson had committed himself on the Williams rush and couldn't recover to stop Filppula.

"I just felt it was one of those games that you have everything going your way, you should bury them," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. "We didn't bury them, we let them stay in the game, and instead of putting a knife in them, and it came back to haunt us. It's a point that we let get away that we should never let it at home."

Justin Abdelkader scored his first regular season NHL goal, lifting a loose puck over Anderson who was down from an earlier shot that led to a goal mouth scramble to give Detroit a 1-0 lead

Abdelkader scored two goals in 10 playoff games last season.

In an interview with Fox Sports Detroit during the first intermission, Abdelkader said: "It feels good. Obviously not as good as my first playoff goal, my first career goal, but it's right there and hopefully it's one of many more to come."

Todd Bertuzzi scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-0 early in the second period as he continued his good play. Using his superior size Bertuzzi established himself in front of the Avalanche net and kept his stick loose to tip in a pass that Henrik Zetterberg threaded through a crowd.
