Black Creek Pioneer Village

Not all of Toronto's attractions are fast-paced and cosmopolitan. A trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village will take you back in time to the 1800s where you can experience what life was like in early Ontario.

The grounds are home to many buildings that are still in their original locations, as well as ones that have been moved and rebuilt from other places in the province. The village has many period homes and barns, as well as a blacksmith shop, cider mill, weaver's shop, schoolhouse, smokehouse, an emporium and a unique 3-seater outhouse. The buildings also contain all kinds of historical pieces like furniture and original machinery.

But what makes the village fun, isn't the buildings, it's the people. Black Creek is a "living" museum filled with costumed actors who spend their day recreating historical life. Add in the various pens of farm animals, and you have a real thriving community.

There are demonstrations and other activities every day, but the schedule can vary so you might want to ask at the information desk when you get there to find out what's happening during your visit. The entire park covers more than 30 acres, and you can easily spend several hours exploring all the buildings and seeing all the presentations.

Black Creek Pioneer Village is open through the spring, summer and autumn months (but closed for January and February). Check their website for complete schedules and opening times, though they are typically open 7 days a week. There is an admission fee, but kids under 4 are free.

One of the best parts of Black Creek is that it's actually right inside the city and can be reached by public transit. Located near York University at the corner of Steeles Avenue and Jane Street, you can take the bus from either Jane or Finch subway stations. If you're driving, there is plenty of paid parking.
