Where to Stay in America's Finest City

There's nothing quite like waiting at the airport. Especially before the holidays. I'm currently sitting in the Ft. Myers (RSW) airport awaiting a 3 hour delayed flight to Dallas after an early Thanksgiving gathering with my in laws. I always try to look at the glass half full though, instead of half empty. So, after getting up and searching for a book at the souvenir shop around the corner, I stumbled upon Travel and Leisure, one of my top favorites on the shelf.

The 2010 Nov/Dec Edition features America's Favorite Cities, broken down into categories. Of course, my first thought is: where does San Diego rank? I immediately thumbed through and found pg. 149 so I could read the list of categories. San Diego apparently ranks #2 with Most Attractive and Active People. In addition, San Diego also ranked #5 for Public Parks & Access to the Outdoors.

Since I work for the hospitality/resort industry, I eagerly seek to promote our resorts. I've had the opportunity to stay at quite a few fine establishments in Southern California and specifically San Diego proper. My favorite in Downtown San Diego is the Sofia Hotel: www.thesofiahotel.com. I can honestly say that staying in this location, anyone from outside of San Diego will get the opportunity to experience those attractive, active San Diegans that T+L speaks of. In addition, the Sofia Hotel is surrounded by Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Petco Park, Qualcomm Stadium and numberous noteworthy bars and restaurants as well.

You may be wondering, why is the Sofia Hotel so special? First of all, you can't beat the price. It's located in the heat of San Diego off of Broaway which is walking distance to everything and you can stay in a room for as low as $99! This elegant 4 star European style resort was originally the Historic Pickwick Building. This restaurant has an excellent restaurant (The Currant), it's pet and eco friendly, the staff is superb, the yoga and fitness studios are immaculate and every room includes WiFi and a flatscreen television.

I'm a Native North Carolinian and I've only lived in California for 2.5 years but I know quality when I see it. And since my job is to sell the best resort experiences, I would put the Sofia Hotel at the top of my list. Take it from me, this is a great place to stay, explore and experience the wonders of America's Finest City.
