Peaking into the farmers market at the old Discovery Channel retail store
You’d never expect it at the Metreon.
But sure enough, the old Discovery Channel Store is now home to a farmers market.
The Discovery Channel Store moved out of that location ages ago. Gone are the dinosaur sets and earth science books. Now, Island Earth Farmers Market packs the area with eateries, produce, jewelry, and baked goods.
Island Earth Farmers Market brings an opportunity to add life to the Metreon. The Metreon itself has been on the decline. Besides the Discovery Channel Store, other venues have come and gone such as the "Where the Wild Things Are" store. Also, announced earlier this year, the Sony and Playstation store will soon close as well.
Walk down the ramp and you are immediately tempted by an army of the Brioche Bakery pastries: bread pudding with raspberries, brownies, and almond croissants to name a few. Whether you are on your way in or on your way out, you can’t help by eye that chocolate chip cookie. All the eateries are by the entrance of the farmers market. A few places to grab a savory bite are Phat Matt’s BBQ or The Flying Falafel with their fresh pita bread and freshly fried falafel.
If you are in the mood for empanadas, El Porteno serves delicious Argentine empanadas such as beef or chicken. They also sell chimichurri sauce to accompany your meat dishes at home. To satisfy that sweet tooth, try a banana and dulce de leche empanada. For other baked goods to try at the farmers market, stop by Black and White Bakery, Panorama Bakery, and Octoberfeast. (Choose from giant muffins, fresh pretzels, and artisan breads.)
And what would a farmers market be without produce? J & J Farms of Stanislaus County brings a variety of fruits. With it being early summer, their tables were full of strawberries, cherries, and a selection of other stone fruits. Pick up some dried fruit and nuts. Or, wander to the baskets and flats of strawberries from Yerena Farms.
The farmers market is open everyday, from 10am to 8pm Monday through Saturday. And on Sunday, the hours are 10am to 7pm. The Metreon main entrance is located on the corner of 4th and Mission. You can find the farmers market just inside.
