Have you ever questioned yourself, “Is it all in my head?” Depression can be confusing when trying to decipher whether it is a serious illness, or just a matter of having a moment of sadness. A moment of sadness will go away, soon. Depression is extreme sadness that lingers for many days, and for many, never seems to go away.

So what exactly causes depression?

1 Genetics. Those that have parents that suffered from a major depressive disorder, such as being bipolar, your chances could increase.

2. Self Image.  Those who suffer from low self-esteem could be triggering depression.

3. Stress. People who are easily overwhelmed by stress could bring themselves depression.

4. Change. Physical changes to the body could be possible triggers.

5. Serious Illness. Those who have suffered a stroke, cancer, hormonal disorders, heart attack, or Parkinson’s disease could face depression.

6. Personal Problems. Death, divorce, job loss, and financial problems are known depression triggers.

7. Abuse. Past abuse could lead to depression later in life.

8. Medications. Certain medications, such as beta blockers, often carry a side effect, depression.

9. Substance Abuse. Those who abuse drugs and alcohol often have high levels of depression.

10. Learning. Yes, it is true; some have learned to be depressed. This happens when someone has grown up in a family where everyone is depressed.
