Depression is not gender specific nor is it a “one size fits all” illness. Men get depressed too and for many of the same reasons as women.

Differences
Depression does differ between the genders. Women tend to sleep too much, whereas men sleep too little. Another difference would be women avoid conflicts and withdrawals where men create the conflict and attack.

Significance
Often men are looked at as the “strong silent type” or one who shows no emotions. Maybe men do not want to admit they feel depressed as they feel it shows weakness. Women on the other hand are vocal and want to talk about it.

Causes of Depression
Causes of depression will vary but they include things like stressful job situation, marital problems, a new child, divorce, death, being lonely, family history, financial issues, and health problems.

Types of Depression
There are four common types of depression. Major depression occurs when one simply can’t enjoy life. Atypical depression happens when a positive mood swings up with positive reinforcement and then comes back down. Dysthymia occurs when one feels normal in between small periods of low moods. Season Affective Disorder occurs with the changes in weather.

Symptoms of Depression
Women tend to feel worthless, often hopeless, and are very sensitive when they are depressed. Men are different and tend to get irritated easily, become aggressive and angry. Men also start to abuse alcohol and look for an adrenaline rush such as reckless driving. The opposite also happens and men can become withdrawn.

Treatments for Depression
The genders respond differently to treatments. Men will want to seek out treatments from someone with experience in treating men with depression. Set goals, find support, and get involved in activities can all help ease the symptoms of depression in men. Some men may find a change in diet, medications, and spirituality to ease the depression.
