Jay Cutler is saying and doing all the right things as the Chicago Bears' new quarterback.
On the field for the first time at Bears' minicamps last week, Cutler showed off his rocket arm.
"You just have to get used to catching a ball that comes that hard," said Chicago receiver Rashied Davis. "It comes fast; it's on you real quick. You've got to get your head around. Once you get used to running routes with him and catching the ball from him, it gets a little bit easier. But he throws the ball pretty hard and the heat is still on the ball 20 yards down the field. It's not like you're [just] five yards away from him and it's hot."
Off the field, Cutler is endearing himself to Bears fans.
Answering questions from fans at the Chicago Bears Expo, including one on what he thinks of the Windy City's female population, the former Denver Broncos QB said: "Good city, good women. I’m single, so I could get into a little trouble here."
Cutler even showed a bit of humor, something he rarely showed in Denver. Asked if he was developing a hatred for the Bears' rival, the Green Bay Packers, Cutler noted: "I never really liked them.’’
His Bears' teammates seem to like their new quarterback anyway.
"He's a tremendous teammate, a good person, a good leader out on the field," Davis said. "He expects us to make plays, just like we expect him to make plays. That's it. Be where we're supposed to be, catch the ball, period."
Cutler appreciates the early vote of confidence.
"The locker room is full of great guys and they have welcomed me with open arms," he said.
Another passing target, kick returning whiz and sometimes receiver Devin Hester, thinks Cutler can elevate his offensive output.
"He's going to make us a lot better," said Hester. "Some of the things Jay tells me ... I wish I could put that in the playbook. Instead of having one window open, he gives you a second option. So if something is not there [with the called play], there could be something else before the play ends. That's the type of quarterback he is."
