“If a child has a health issue and no insurance we make sure we find a dentist for them” Cyndi Armstrong stated. Armstrong is the school nurse at Union Grove High School and Elementary School, in Racine County. Cyndi Armstrong was contacted in order to find out what role a school nurse plays in getting children dental care.

“About two years ago a teacher sent a child to the nurse’s office because of their teeth. The child had soreness, redness and the teeth looked decayed. We called the parent and they didn’t have insurance. We set up a dental visit. The dentist donated the time. Even with Badger care, a pediatric dentist is difficult for them to get in for an appointment” Armstrong said.

“Dr. Ulloa has one day of free dental care a year and we make sure they know about it. It is usually in February” Armstrong stated. Dr. Ulloa is a dentist in Union Grove.

“Mainly we deal with children losing their baby teeth during the school day. We have tooth shaped plastic holders they can wear around their necks when the tooth falls out” Armstrong said.

“Usually when they are in high school they handle dental problems on their own or go to their parents instead of the nurse” Armstrong stated. She added that a health aid works with her at Union Grove Elementary School for three hours a day. Armstrong works at the Elementary school for a half day on Tuesdays and at the high school 4.5 hours on Mondays.

It is good to know that a school nurse, such as Cyndi Armstrong, cares enough to connect parents with resources when help is needed.
