Healthcare in the Lone Star state: right or privilege?

Texas leads the nation for the number of uninsured residents. It ranks among the worst 10 states for healthcare access, prevention of disease, medical treatment, avoidable hospital use and inequality of health care between the rich and poor. Texas is also among the bottom ten states for preventive care for diabetics, screening tests for seniors and dental check-ups.

Yet, Texas ranks above the national average for infant mortality, breast cancer deaths and the number of non-smokers. It is also home to world renowned medical complexes and some of the most advanced medical treatment options in the world.

Unlike other states that fair poorly on healthcare metrics for their citizenry, Texas is fiscally vibrant and not besieged with the economic woes affecting fellow bottom-list dwellers. The state chooses not to spend more on basic healthcare because a core group of Texas legislators do not believe healthcare is a fundamental right.
