Fort Collins legislators ace environmental test

All three Fort Collins state legislators earned a grade of 100 percent again from Colorado Conservation Voters. The three Democrats also aced the test last year. In the past two legislative sessions, they voted with CCV on every environmental issue.

CCV advocates for environmental protections, endorses pro-environment candidates and covers the legislative session’s environmental votes. The group has worked with other statewide environmental groups to produce the legislative scorecard for 13 years. This year, the group chose 15 bills that received attention and lobbying efforts from the environmental community. It excluded most consensus votes on non-controversial issues.

State Sen. Bob Bacon voted for auto emissions reductions, a habitat stamp extension, renewable energy incentives, renewable energy for schools and 11 other bills that CCV supported. Reps. Jon Kefalas and Randy Fischer also voted with the CCV on all 15 bills.

At the other end of the scale, Sen. Kevin Lundberg earned an 8 percent grade, well into the F range. He voted for a water rights tax credit. He took the opposing position on the 14 other measures that were important to the CCV. Lundberg represents most of Larimer County outside of the Fort Collins area.

Most Democratic legislators in both chambers earned scores above 90 percent, with nearly 30 house members scoring 100 percent. Nearly 20 senators aced the test. Republicans typically earned less than 50 percent, with a handful earning a score of zero after taking the opposing position on all 15 CCV issues.

On the other hand, the numbers are largely reversed on the Colorado Union of Taxpayers’ scorecard. Lundberg had a score of 78 while the Fort Collins Democrats ranked below 20 percent.

Visit the CCV Web site for more information on the group’s scorecard. For a list of some other scorecard votes, visit the Project Vote Smart page for Larimer County.
