There might be a new Governor in town in the state of Arizona, and if you thought Governor Jan Brewer was bad news, then prepare yourself for Sheriff “make my day” Joe Arpaio. Word is Arpaio, who is said to be one tough hombre, has his eye on the Governor's seat. Arpaio's policing methods have brought with them charges of discrimination as well as charges for civil rights violations, that the ACLU has been looking into.

Sheriff Arpaio has been responsible for extensive immigration raids, which his department has conducted. In fact, the manner in which some of these raids were conducted, has led to a class action suit brought about by the ACLU. The charges assert that Arpaio abused the power that was provided to him under his agreement with Homeland Security. This power, is said to have been what allowed his department to enforce immigration laws to begin with.

Arpaio, who embraces the nickname "America's Toughest Sheriff" is known to keep his prisoners in tents in Maricopa County and he has boasted about the fact that he makes them wear pink underwear and feeds them on “less than a dollar a day”. Sheriff Arpaio responded to reporters questions regarding his run for Governor stating "I am not running for governor now until I decide over the weekend with a glass of wine and my wife, since my mother and father came here from Italy, with a little spaghetti and meatballs."

Sheriff Arpaio is said to be a dedicated supporter of the new immigration law and while some may fear him, others are applauding his methods. Regardless of whatever side of the immigration aisle you choose to sit on, if  Arpaio wins the Governor's seat, the state of Arizona is in for one wild and possibly terrifying ride.
