Delaware Nanticoke Indians plan their annual September Powwow

The powwow is a historic celebration that brings many Native American tribes to annual event near Millsboro. The event is the celebration of the Nanticoke history and culture throughout the last 400 years.

The celebration will be held September 12th and 13th in Long Neck/Millsboro, Delaware. The wooded area provides plenty of parking for school and tour buses as well as cars and motorcycles. All day parking is about $8.00 a car. Powwow admission is $2.00 per adult and $1.00 per child. There is a separate price for motorcycles and buses. There will be trams to transport guest from the parking areas to the powwow encampment. The powwow will host about 40 different trial vendors with a variety of items for sale. A guest can find Native American crafts, jewelry, clothing, paintings, pottery as well as food and drinks. For the children, there will be face painting and storytelling.

The celebration begins with the entrance of flag bearers and American Indian dancers. Native American dancers enter the powwow dance circle by age and style of regalia. They dance in line following the flags. It is a ceremony similar to the National Anthem. The Flag ceremony is the Native American way of honoring the tribal, state, and American flags. The ceremony starts at noon on Saturday with a following dance at 4pm. During the day, there will be dance and regatta competitions. Sunday begins at 10am with a Worship Service followed by another Grand Entry dance at 1:30pm. Powwow participants, dancers, and the handicapped are provided chairs, so if attending, bring a lawn chair.
