Why exercise works

Weight lifting is key to a healthy environment for your body.

It's important to have an understanding at a very high and simplistic level of why exercise works, otherwise one may not understand why they don't have the body they want.

The human body is designed by nature to adapt to its environment to handle it more easily.  This is the fundamental theory behind exercise at the most simplistic level.

If you put your body in a sedentary (meaning almost zero activity) environment such as sitting in an office all day, and coming home to crash on the couch to watch TV for a few hours - you are signaling to your body that it can adapt to that, and it will.  Your body will realize it doesn't have to be a lean-machine to survive easily in that environment and you'll put on weight like its your part-time job.

Now, if you consistently (4-5 days a week) put your body in a physically stressed environment (enter exercise routine) your body will adapt to that as well.

So how can you make the most of this simple explanation? Take a few minutes right now to think about the consistent environment you put your body in on a week-to-week basis.  Do you sit around a lot?  Is physical activity a regular part of your life?  This gives one an idea of why your body looks the way it does, or the direction your body is headed (your body takes time to adjust).

The BEAUTY of a proper exercise routine is that it creates the right amount of stress on your body to force it to adapt (or maintain if you are already in good shape) and it does so in less than an hour a day.

A prime example of this is sports.  Look at all the Olympic swimming athletes.  Isn't it odd that they all have nearly identical body types?  It's not because they were naturally designed to be a swimmer.  Yes, one could make the argument they are gifted swimmers, but the reality is that their bodies all look similar because they have nearly identical environments.  Look at other sports - sprinters, marathon runners, figure skaters, tennis players - the same holds true for most any sport.

The next step after realizing you need to put your body in a different environment, is creating the environment in the right way, and that is designing a workout that has the right components of exercise and rest to get the maximum results.
