Should I workout if I'm sick?

With flu season upon us, it's important to know whether or not it makes sense to continue to work out, or take time away from the gym if you aren't feeling up to par.  Being sick, whether it's the flu or a common cold can throw anyone off track from obtaining or keeping results.

The Rule:  If the feeling of sickness is below your head, take a day (or more) off.  If you feel anything is off balance from the neck down, whether an upset stomach, or in particular a feeling of "achiness", skip the gym, drink plenty of water, and get to bed early.  Taking time off from the gym will not hurt you in the long run (pun intended), and you will get yourself back in the gym working out hard and achieving results in no time.

For your first day or two back, if you are out of pocket for a solid week, be sure to reduce the intensity of your workout and see how you feel the next day.  It's best to ease back into the first workout or two to be sure you don't put yourself out for another full week.

If the feeling of sickness is only in your head, such as a head cold, LeanDream recommends a moderate-intensity workout.  The key here is moderate.  You are still sick, so your body is signaling to you that it's fighting something, and it needs that extra energy to fight it - not to get you through an all-out workout.

It's difficult to know how to adjust your workouts when you are sick, and even harder to get back on track quickly.  LeanDream's deluxe workout packages include 12 weekly follow up conversations with your own personal trainer, during which adjustments are made to your routine on the spot - to account for times when you might be down-and-out.  Visit LeanDream, where a healthier tomorrow starts today.
