As if the deliciously cool weather wasn't enough to inspire runners to register for a fall race, one Washington-area 5K offered an additional enticement: A promise of seeing a pumpkin weighing more than 1,000 pounds at the finish line.
The appropriately named Great Pumpkin 5K, which kicked off its first annual running back on Oct. 10 at Reston Town Center, offered just that, and 1,600 participants turned out for it. Lou Holder from the Greater Washington Sports Alliance sent photos and stats from the race, which benefited the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute.
1,600: Total participants
1,400: Registered runners in the Inaugural Anthem Great Pumpkin 5k
200: Kids in the Children’s Pumpkin Dash
1057: Weight, in pounds, of the namesake pumpkin
10: Age of Matthew Morris of Burkeville, Va., the pumpkin's proud producer
