A US Senator from the state of Utah has filed a bill that would prevent Washington, DC from implementing a gay marriage bill as it was originally passed. The new bill would require a referendum on the issue before it could go into effect.

Senator Bob Bennett of Utah, a Republican, introduced the bill on Tuesday. It calls to postpone the scheduled effective date of the original bill until voters have a chance to decide on whether or not gay marriage should be legal in Washington, DC. To contact Senator Bennett and express your opinion on the issue, visit his website at http://bennett.senate.gov.

The original bill was passed by the DC City Council in December and is currently slated to go into effect in March. However, because Washington is a federal district and not a state, Congress has the final say on all laws within its boundaries. The gay marriage bill is currently under a state of congressional review, allowing Senator Bennett to introduce his own plan. A fellow Republican in the House, Representative Jason Chaffetz, has filed similar legislation in the lower branch of Congress.

I'm confused, is Bob Bennett a Senator of Utah or Washington D.C.?

Good to see that Vitter co-sponsored this bill. Marriage should be between one woman, one man and a hooker.

Very good to see that at least someone is trying to stop gay marriage from happening.

What needs to happen is a Congressional investigation into NOM and into those organizations funding it.

What does HE care?! He is from Utah. Maybe he should stop spreading his close mindedness and stop trying to push his views on everyone. Why not let the public vote on whether divorce should be legal?! What, THE WEDDING VOWS say that marriage is forever?! If you say those vows in front of GOD, then why should divorce be legal?! Everyone deserves equal rights. If being gay is going against God and nature, then why do gays exists? Wake up and smell freedom and justice, the two basis of this country. Wake up and stop being such intolerant fools. Bennett can do whatever he wants in Utah, but he should leave us alone.

This is very unfair, he's a Utah senator. He should keep his bigotry in his own state and leave DC gays alone. Civil rights should not be up for popular vote. It wasn't right in the 60s and it isn't right now.

Good luck *sarcasm* passing this BS legislating Senator Bennett. While your at it; how about a bill where everyone must vote on approving everyone's marriage. These people are UNChristians and do not follow anything remotely what Jesus preached. A bunch of very hateful people and very Un-American as well.

Wow, back off. The thing about democracy is that minority rights are never put to a vote. This is analogous to saying we should've left slavery up to a popular vote.

What irritates me is that he is from Utah. Really, it just irritates me in general that Congress has jurisdiction over DC because none of them really represent DC. Why is a Utah congressmen trying to block same-sex marriage a few thousand miles away?

This will never get out of committee and on to the floor.

God save us from your followers. Its about time for Americans to stand up to these religious right wing nuts and tell them to kiss off and stop trying to turn our country into a theocracy. With so many evil deeds in the name of religion and God, which religion will prevail and who will be next in line for persecution after gays?
