DC Children's Books: January 27-29

What's happening for kids and books in the DC area this weekend? Several Barnes & Noble stores in the region offer morning storytimes, while other stores in the chain kick off No Name-Calling Week with special events. On Sunday at Busboys and Poets, 5th & K, kids gets a chance to shine, showing off their way with words at an evening poetry slam.

On Friday, Jan. 27, Barnes & Noble in Rockville Pike hosts Rockin' Readers: For Kids and Their Parents. This parent/child book group will be discussing Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. 7 pm, Montrose Crossing, 12089 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852, 301-881-0237

On Sunday, Jan. 29, Busboys & Poets, 5th and K will host a DC Youth Poetry Slam. Says the venue: "This slam will determine who makes the 2012 DC Youth Slam Team going to regional and national slam events to represent the DC metro area." 5 pm, Cullen Room, Busboys & Poets, 1025 5th Street, NW, Washington, DC) opened its doors in September of 2008.

Note for the week ahead: on Monday, Jan. 30, There will be a special event for teens in Fairfax on name-calling in the public schools. The Northern Virginia Student Leadership Team will talk about how schools are combating name-calling in our local schools. There will be lesson plans for teachers to take away with them and no name-calling pledges for kids to sign.
