Washington, D.C.’s Willard InterContinental Hotel (Willard), in cooperation with hospitality environmental consultant firm EnviRelation, LLC, recently published its 2008 Sustainability Report. It metrically reports the year’s results of the hospitality firm’s Sustainable Development strategy, also known as “The Next 100 Years” – an initiative originally begun in 2005.
- Project CARE: community and workplace quality of life concerns.
- Project COMMUNICATE: educate stakeholders about sustainability efforts; and motivate the hospitality industry to embrace sustainability.
- Project EDUCATE: providing enrichment and educational programs for children.
- Project HEALTH: promoting healthy living and habits with hotel employees; and at a later time to include guests as well.
- Project GREEN: hotel’s impact on land, conservation, biodiversity and climate change.
- Project BLUE: addresses impact on water-related issues.
- Project PURCHASE: goal to buy local, organic, sustainable products as much as possible, depending on its economic viability.
In April 2009, the Willard InterContinental Hotel was also the recipient of the 2009 Mayor’s Environmental Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Hotel. The hotel’s “Next 100 Years” plan, begun in 2005, outlines sustainable projects incorporating social and ecological harmony, or the three P’s (Profit-People-Planet). Environmental achievements include purchasing wind renewable energy certificates from Pepco Energy Services for 100% of its energy to be provided by wind technology; waste reduction; use of green cleaning products; and increased recycling, composting, and energy and water conservation efforts.
Highlights of 2009 initiatives include sponsorship of a water well for a Native American family on a reservation in South Dakota as well as adopting DC public school, Thomson Elementary, by supporting educational enrichment activities for students.
