Charla Nash after being mauled by a chimp
In February 2009, Charla Nash made headlines as the woman who was mauled by a chimpanzee. The 200 lb. 14-year-old chimp was the pet of her long time friend Sandra Herold. Nash had just moved to Stamford, CT and was working for Herold's tow truck company. While living in Stamford Nash also occassionally helped care for Herold’s pet chimpanzee, Travis, whom she’d known for 10 years. On that fateful February day, Travis escaped from his cage and the rest is a horror story. Travis attacked Nash ripping off her entire jaw, ripping out her eyes, leaving her nose hanging on by a thread, and even ripping off Nash's hands.

Charla Nash before being mauled
In an exclusive interview on Oprah, Nash revealed her mauled face for the first time and relived what she remembered of the event, which was very little. Nash said she doesn't know the full extent of her injuries and that she doesn't want to know because she just wants to focus on getting healthy. Until today's interview, Nash has walked around the hospital with her face covered although she has never seen her injuries because she no longer has eyes. She covers herself to avoid frightening others. The images of Nash's face were graphic and disturbing. It is shocking that Herold was allowed to keep a wild animal as a pet. Charla Nash and her family are suing Sandra Herold. Herold's lawyer released the following statement to Oprah.
"All of Sandy's hopes and prayers are with Charla and her daughter in this challenging time. Sandy has always tried to help Charla and wishes her the best. When Charla lost her job, it was Sandy who provided her with employment and a place to live. Sandy hopes and prays for a full and speedy recovery." - Statement from Robert Golger Sandra Herold's Attorney

Sandy Herold, Travis's owner, "hopes and prays for a full and speedy recovery"? The woman has lost her fingers and her entire face, including her eyes! While I'm sure she feels terrible about the whole incident, this seems a foolish thing to say surely? Herold should feel terribly guilty about what has happened - she kept an exotic wild animal as some sort of bizarre substitute child. Let's not forget poor Travis was a victim too.
Wow this is tragic. @ Bob dude who peed in your wheaties. If you don't like this lady's article just move on. Just because you don't like her style doesn't mean she can't write. and fateful is appropriate it means something with momentous consequences and I'd say this event qualifies.
It has nothing to do with liking or not liking her 'style.' It's not about a style, it's about basic rules of English grammar and composition, not to mention reporting.
If she wants to be a writer, she should learn at least a few of them. She can't write a basic, simple article and clearly no one is editing it at all. The Examiner wants to post it on the Internet as if it's coherent or correct, I'm free to comment on its appalling lack of fact-checking, coherence and correct grammar and punctuation.
I agree Travis was a victim too, the entire thing was tragic, and entirely preventable.
I appreciate everyone's comments. Thanks for reading! @ Bob - The Examiner does not edit our articles like a print newspaper and sometimes many of us need a second set of eyes. This is especially true when we're writing articles quickly. Unfortunately, the quick turnaround results in misstated information and occasional errors. Your delivery is somewhat rude, but I appreciate your criticism and accept it as constructive. @ Whoa thank you for jumping to my defense, but I am not bothered by Bob's comments. I've made a successful career out of writing. :-)
Bob's last comment should be removed. That is just plain cruel and heartless.Bob-- Do you feel better making fun of this woman and the way she looks? You are a sad and pathetic person to make a joke at her expense.
I understand that Charla Nash and her family are angry about the attack, and the extent of the damage that she recieved. However, it is not Herolds fault that the chimpanzee attacked. She can't read animal minds, and I don't believe that they should sue, yes be angry, but don't forget that the only reason Charla was able to have a livelihood, was because of the charity and job that her friend gave her.
BOB you should remove your comments and atay off this website. PLEASE AND THANK YOU=} I IMPLORE MISS CHARLA NASH GOES THROUGH TH BEST OF RECOVERY!
I removed Bob's last comment. That was completely uncalled for. I apologize to anyone who was offended.
I am wondering why someone would keep a chimpanzee as a pet,i don't want to sound mean but these kind kind of animal sould be in their natural habitat whith professional supervision or in a zoo with pprofessional supervision.
I hope that madam Nash will have a great recovery and god bless her.
I mean Sandy Herold is not Jane Goodall or a Professional of the wildlife.
