Six New England Getaway Vacation Ideas
People are taking notice of some of the great American destinations that offer inexpensive alternatives to travel in the midst of a challenging economy. New England’s six states are perfectly placed for a series of getaway vacations that offer great food, quaint hotels, local culture, outdoor adventures and historic attractions.
As the northernmost state in the continental United States, Maine offers excellent outdoor experiences. Spend a day exploring Acadia National Park’s 41,000 acres of rock and beach coast land. Acadia is perfect for hiking and biking along various paths and the gravel carriage trails through the center of the park. However, the area can also be enjoyed by car along the scenic 27 mile Park Loop Road.

Some of the most beautiful unspoiled lands you will find in the United States exist in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A favorite getaway is staying in Conway to enjoy shopping the numerous outlet stores followed by a scenic drive up the 28 mile Kancamagus Highway where you can enjoy hiking along the Swift River and some of the most picturesque spots for covered bridges.
Vermont is one getaway that will always deliver an enchanting experience of times gone by. Delight in the pristine Green Mountains of Vermont on a scenic drive from Wilmington to Stowe along Route 100. This 150 mile stretch of winding roadway through the heart of Vermont offers an indulgence of experiences like apple cider, horseback riding and antique shopping.
Massachusetts provides a diverse array of heritage and culture. If you have never experienced historic Boston, then embark on a weekend getaway to New England’s largest city. Boston’s Freedom Trail will take you along a marked path of historic sites such as the Old State House, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the USS Constitution, America’s oldest fully commissioned ship in the US Navy.
Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the union, yet it offers as varied an experience as any other New England state. If you want to get outdoors and enjoy some of the best bike paths in the nation, you need to plan your getaway along the Blackstone Valley Bikeway. This path winds from the southern part of Massachusetts all the way down through Providence, RI as part of the 3000 mile East Coast Greenway.
Connecticut offers a transitional bridge from the hustle of nearby New York city to the south and the rural New England charm the north. Connecticut has large casinos, 5 star resort spas and quaint seaside towns like Mystic. Plan a getaway here where you can visit the Mystic Seaport Museum of America and the Sea, the Mystic Aquarium or simply enjoy the quaint town lined with maritime shops and eateries.
New England vacations offer so many different kinds of getaway experiences that it is always hard to choose. Yet every trip you ever make through the region is certain to deliver a unique feeling that can’t be enjoyed anywhere else on the globe. Whether it is the taste of clam chowder, the colors of the fall foliage, the scenic coastlines, the historic locales or the diversity of the people, New England simply has a charm that wins you over from the start and beacons you to return for a lifetime.

Also, not to be missed while in Maine at the Acadia National Park, sunrise on Cadillac Mountain! I caught the magnificent site last week and it was well worth having set the alarm for.
