We road the Verde Canyon Railway this week and were thrilled to see and photograph the eagles.

The rocky red cliffs of a pristine river canyon form a dramatic backdrop for the annual Eagle Watch season aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad.

Each winter migrating American bald and golden eagles join resident raptors in the Verde Canyon. Passengers and crew alike marvel at the six-foot wingspans etched against the brilliant blue backdrop as these masters of the sky soar on gentle thermals high above the towering red rock pinnacles. As the huge birds settle in, they tumble together in pairs, displaying breathtaking courting rituals as old as the canyon itself. To the delight of passengers, these welcome visitors spend the winter leisurely plucking fish from the perennially flowing Verde River.

Because the Verde Canyon is a protected breeding area, and is thus shut off from the public, the Verde Canyon Railroad offers a unique opportunity to view these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Having cohabited with the railroad for tens of generations, the eagles pay no mind as the train clickety-clacks its way to Perkinsville and back.

In addition to the nation's symbol of freedom, the Verde Canyon offers a warm winter respite to countless other migrating birds, enticed by the clear waters of the Verde River and abundant sustenance provided by the canyon wildlife and foliage. Recognized as an "Arizona Treasure," the Verde Canyon Railroad is a no-stress wilderness adventure. The outdoor viewing cars, easily accessible from both first-class and coach accommodations, are the perfect venue for eagle watching.

Trains depart the depot at 1:00 pm and return at 5:00 pm, just in time to mosey down to the Blazin' M Chuckwagon Dinner Show in nearby Cottonwood. Reservations for this uniquely Arizona cowboy experience can be made at the same time as train reservations.

When You Go:

The Verde Canyon Railroad depot is located in Clarkdale Arizona, 25 minutes from Sedona and 2 hours north of Phoenix.
