David Cook names his band and new pooch

David Cook with DJ Darren Ferraira (MJ's Big Blog)

You couldn't help but love David Cook on American Idol, not only for his amazing and unique performances, but also for the fact that he admitted he's a straight up "word nerd."  It's always nice to see someone in entertainment who's not only smart, but values the written word.  This will come in especially handy when he helps to write his own music, which he has already done on his smash hit debut album.  And, according to MJ's Big Blog, David has named his band, and it's a doozie:  David Cook and The Anthemic.  Here are the details:

David revealed the news in an interview with Darren Ferraira of KHOP 95.1, Modesto, CA on Friday.

Ferraira twittered a challenge to David Cook fans–that if he reached 1000 followers by noon Pacific time on Sunday, he would reveal, with David’s permission, the band’s name.

Cook fans, eager to know the new name, quickly met the goal, and the video with the reveal was posted at noon PST.

After getting the OK from his handler, David spilled the news to Ferraira, “I think the name of the band we’re going to go with…the one we’re thinking of is…the Anthemic, David Cook and the Anthemic.

“It’s an anthem, it’s epic, it’s big,” explains David, “that’s what I feel the band has the potential to be, it’s where we want to go.”

David adds, “We tried for months for band names, and it’s the one we’re shooting for at the moment.”

I have to agree with "MJ" that the band name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.  My initial reaction was that he might want to "dumb that one down" a bit.  I love that he is a brainiac, but the band name isn't exactly catchy.  Then again, who am I to judge?

In keeping with his week of naming things, David has also reportedly gotten a Scottish Terrier and dubbed him "Dublin."  Now that is good!

I wasn't surprised to hear that David was able to get so many Twitter followers so fast, and he, too, has been tweeting up a storm.  It's fun to read his Twit-bits from the road.  He has been keeping his Twitter page very up to date, and even tweeted his condolences to the Kennedy family on the death of Ted Kennedy yesterday.  And this tweet made me laugh:

Layover in @DavidArchie territory. Is it safe to come out yet? ~D

Who knows?  Perhaps he'll even tell us more about the supposed secret girlfriend he's been keeping via his Twitter page!

He's had Dublin since last year; it isn't a new thing.

Um yeah, he's had Dublin since January. But why should he "dumb down" the name for the band? Perhaps some individuals need to increase their vocabulary.

And I wouldn't hold my breath on any love life details coming to light on Twitter. He's already voiced his disdain for the program being used for the purpose of disclosing personal information. Though I highly doubt such a relationship even exists.

Does the Dallas Examiner actually investigate and report up-to-date entertainment news, or does it just make up crap when the journalist gets bored?

Jury is still out for me on the name. I agree it doesn't roll off the tongue but it probably fits DC's vibe. Not a Twitter fan but I have enjoyed his latest posts.

Will have to agree with above posts on the Dublin announcement - that's old news to us die-hard Cook fans Marnie!

There was an update on the ATL model story saying that once the news broke on Page Six in the NY POST, Cook cut off all communication with her. Who knows if they were really seeing each other much, but from what we've seen so far I'd say this to any girl lucky enough to date Cook: DO NOT kiss and tell. If things end up in the tabloids he will drop you faster than you can say paparazzi.

The definition of "Anthemic" really seems to fit David and what he is trying to do with his music...

The term anthemic is not strictly a word, yet is used to describe music that has a particular presence to it/atmospheric feel.

In hardcore/punk an anthemic band would be one who have plentiful singalongs and a tight, melodic, and often heavy rhythm section. Bands such as Bane and With Honor are a good example of this.

Naming the band is dumb. David Cook is the star and he is diluting his "name" but doing this. Another stupid idea of his...leave it alone. As David Cook.

I love the name of the band David Cook and the Anthemic. If you know the true meaning of this word it fits the band perfectly & for those who really know David's personality & the person he is not just on stage this is so him. As far as Dublin David has had him since January when he was three months old. The name is not new. And again this is David people didn't get the joke. A Scotty named after a city in Ireland. I got it right away. And by the way Dublin is the cuttest dog on the planet. And yes he is on tour with David.
