One of my favortie blog entries is entitled 20 Great Things About Dating a Writer, by a truly talented writer, Kathyn Vercillo. For Kathyrn's original article, just click on the link above. Below is an excerpt from the orginal article edited with my personal twist on the subject. (My comments are italicized.)
It's all you ever wanted to know about dating a writer...
1. Writers will romance you with words. We can't help it. It's in our blood and it drips from our keyboard.
2. Writers will write about you. Date a writer and you’ll find yourself looking to see if there are references to you in the articles, blogs, etc. (According to some of my ex-boyfriends.)
3. Writers will take you to interesting events. Writers as a general rule are curious people. We like to go to lots of different types of things so that we can widen the boundaries of our life experience and therefore broaden our writing.
4. Writers will acknowledge you and dedicate things to you. Writers are big on acknowledging those who have helped them.
5. Writers will offer you a unique perspective on life. There is a writing quote about how writers taste life twice - once in the living and once in the re-telling on the page. Writers pay attention to details that most people never even notice so that they can recapture the world in their writing. When you date a writer, you will be privy to all of their insights about life’s events and experiences - and you may find that you get to see things in a whole new light.
6. Writers are smart. The majority of writers are intelligent people. They are usually well-read and well-educated which means they can hold their own in many types of conversations.
7. Writers are really passionate. Writers use all of their senses. They are passionate about their work and passionate about their lives. Your life will be enhanced by this passion for things when you date a writer.
8. Writers can think through their feelings (and sometimes yours). Writers may be really passionate but most of them don’t fly off-the-handle with emotion. They like to take time to process things. And it generally means we have a discernment and insight into other people's feelings as well.
9. Writers are creative. This sounds obvious but it has a deeper truth to it. Creative people are more capable of coming up with solutions to problems in life. Dating a writer means a chance to come up with creative solutions to life’s problems.
10. Writers wear their hearts on their sleeves. Sure this depends on the writer but most writers are pretty good at articulating what is going on with them. If they adore you, you’ll know it. If they’re mad at you, you probably won’t have to guess at why. So true!
11. Writers may be able to adjust their schedules for you. Writers who can set their own schedules might be willing to rearrange things to spend time with you.
12. Writers can find 1000 ways to tell you what they're feeling. Writers are wordy and they like to express themselves. Actually, in my case, if I don't tell you what I feel, I will implode. There's no way for me to hold it in.
13. Writers communicate in a bunch of different ways. Most writers are pretty flexible in how they communicate. They’ll be just as content to get an email from you or to chat on IM with you as they are to talk on the phone (maybe even more so). This means that however you communicate regularly is probably fine for the writer you’re dating. Just know that non-communication is not an option. We thrive on communication!
14. Writers can work from anywhere. This is nice because it means that writers can happily travel with you. They may have to take a laptop and spend some time at the hotel when you go to the beach but you can enjoy much easier vacation planning with a writer than with someone who works a 9-5 job.
15. Writers are surrounded by interesting people. It's true! I have such an eclectic group of friends. Their friendships make me a better person and a better writer.

Hey! You left out writers are sexy! I know I look hot in my reading glasses! :)
Now for balance here's the negative things about writers:
- writers can be easily bored
- can be all talk but no action
- can write about things they dont have a clue about
- theorists rather than actuals
- blah, blah, blah - blah blah
- dont make enough money, and many writers are broke
- can be extremely mean and passive aggressive in sugar coated ways
- are crazy from reading all kinds of nonsense
- some writers find nothing wrong with marquis de sade. enough said
- keep thinking and not doing. writers think about their laundry, but dont do their laundry
- dont keep things simple. writers complicate things. they'll give a treatise on why they should go to burger king instead of jack in the box
- many writers are procrastinators. they think and waste time
i have a joke about writers
when a male writer has sex with his girlfriend, what do you have?
2 lesbians going at it
Well, I'm sure sold (in spite of Marv's warnings)! I do love smart, passionate women (the hot ones, of course). Guess I could get over getting beaten regularly at Scrabble. :-)
Sami - Yep! Writers ARE sexy, but I'd rather be told that I'm sexy than have to tell others that I am. Thanks for the comment!
Marv - Ouch! I take it you had a bad experience dating a writer? Hopefully all of my ex's would tell you that your experience is the exception and not the rule.
Big Bob - that is too funny. Personally, I've never dated a writer (maybe that's why...)
Dave - thank you for all of your comments in my other posts. And by the way, a writer of relationships would probably let you win at Scrabble - at least once in a while :)
Well, having dated a writer I would have to agree with most if not all of Melindas and Kathryns article. Especially 2,5,7,8 and 10:). In my experience I learned a lot about women, that I thought I knew. And, I will be forever grateful for the talks and times weve shared. I think being a writer, she was able to express to me what other women have not been able to in the past. Through print and other wise..
Sorry Marv about your bad experience, were dating Arianna Huffington???
By the way, the writer I dated is one of the Beautiful people, Ive ever known, Sexy you bet, Smart of course, and very Passionate about her life, family, friends and endeavors she involved in..
Surprise, by the way it was Melinda!!! Increible, Beautiful, Lady!!!
Can writers dance?
Hi Cliff,
Can we or do we? This writer does!
