Melissa Rycroft will return next week -- ABC
Go-Go's singer Belinda Carlisle was the first victim eliminated from Dancing with the Stars, after facing off against Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the first DWTS Dance-Off, a new addition to ABC's phenomenally popular competition show.
With partner Jonathan Roberts, Carlisle danced the Salsa number she also danced on Monday night, complete with the 50-year-old's handstand at the end of the number. The judges, however, were not impresserd. Although head judge Len Goodman complimented Carlilse for improving on her "hip action," judge Bruno Tonioli noted that she lost her footwork halfway through the dance.
Carlisle's scores were a 5, 6 and 6, for a combined score of 17.
The Woz and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, danced the Quick Step, also performed on Monday night's show. The Woz, wearing his nerd glasses, danced better than expected and got a rousing ovation from the studio audience. The judges told Wozniak they admired his spirit and determination, but Tonioli said he wasn't a dancer. Judge Carrie Anne Inaba said the Woz was smoother on Tuesday than he had been on Monday night's show. Goodman complimented the Woz for his "entertainment and fun."
The Woz's scores were a 6, 5 and 6, for a combined score of 17.
The Results Show got off to a rousing start, with fast-paced dance numbers by the professionals and the Macy's All Star Dancers, and a million promos about DWTS' first-ever dance-off between the two couples with the lowest number of public votes and judges' scores.
Meanwhile, by 9:15 p.m., eight couples had already been informed that they were "safe" to dance next week and continue in the competition. They were: Gilles Marini, Melissa Rycroft, Lil' Kim, Lawrence Taylor, Shawn Johnson, Chuck Wicks, David Allen Grier and Denise Richardson.
At 9:30, Steve-O, Holly Madison, and Ty Murray also were informed that they were safe, leaving the Dance-Off to be performed between Wozniak and Carlisle. Steve-O's redemption from the viewers might have been at least partly out of sympathy. The former star of Jackass injured his back just two hours before the live Monday night show and was hospitalized. He reappeared for Tuesday's Results Show, explaining that he'd insisted on doing a stunt at the end of his dance that resulted in the injury and noted that partner Lacey Schwimmer had advised him against doing it.
