The first Tuesday of each month at 7pm, produced by The PGK Project and hosted by 8Teen Arts & Cultural Center, is now the day to see “The Movement” (Dance and Performance Series). In the spirit of 4 x 4 x Floor and Dance N’ Dine, (also produced by The PGK Project), this new monthly series is yet one more opportunity for established and emerging local artists of all ages to present finished or “in-process” works. Centrally located just off University Avenue at 3925 Ohio Street in the North Park Arts District, 8Teen Arts & CulturalCenter maintains a stunning wide-open floor conducive for all types of performance (including dance), with a flexible sound and lighting system. A $5 suggested donation at the door and the raffling of dance, music, theatre, movie tickets, services and certificates, provided by their monthly sponsors from throughout San DiegoCounty, is a fun way to feed a fund and pay artists for their performances while developing audiences for the arts.
“Our mutual mission is to provide affordable, entertaining performances of the highest quality that promote community, accessibility and diversity in a non-traditional way,” said Peter Kalivas, founder and director of The PGK Project. “To produce events that create appreciation and awareness for the arts, and where there is a cultural expression intended for everyone.”
A permanent concession run by 8Teen Arts & CulturalCenter, featuring coffee, teas, hot dogs, smoothies, and other beverages along with a separate beer and wine concession, will remain available at this event. Eighteen percent of concession profits go immediately toward establishing “House of Hope,” a short-term emergency shelter for homeless young adults (18-24). “The Movement’s” income supports the Performance Fund, and a percentage goes to support 8Teen Arts & Cultural Center’s programming, including art and music classes and mentoring in administration and production for homeless and disadvantaged youth.
Unlike Bluefoot Bar & Lounge (21 and over and host of 4 x 4 x Floor), this is an ALL AGES FACILITY for performers and audiences. Established in November 2008, 8Teen Arts & CulturalCenter provides a place for the free expression of art and the development of life skills through the arts. “Here we can represent youth dance in San Diego,” Kalivas said. “We’ll engage audiences in a different way.”
