Bodiography gives voice to those unheard

Photo of Caruso and the doctors by Eric Rose

The Bodiography studio nestled in the heart of Squirrel Hill bustles with dancers, musicians and a photographer all preparing for their biggest production yet, "HEART: function versus emotion."

Director of Bodiography Contemporary Ballet Maria Caruso thoughtfully watches and guides her dancers as they attempt a section of movement dedicated to their new ballet premiering at the Byham Theater on February 19th and 20th, 2010.

Caruso began her choreographic process almost a year ago when she initiated collaboration with Dr. McNamara (Director of the UPMC Heart Failure/Transplantation Program), surgeon Dr. Kormos, and several patients dealing with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH).

It is of high importance for Caruso to articulate with accuracy not only the literal actions of the surgeons, but also the emotional reactions of the patients.  She has spent long hours of research on the topic, meeting with patients and doctors, and even watching an eight hour open heart transplant.

Caruso believes that without proper research, she will not be able to give an accurate "artistic presentation."  The desire to move forward from her past work and move into the maturity of this intense subject matter is palpable.  She speaks vehemently and passionately of the importance of using her art to give voice to people who are otherwise unheard.

As the doctors also feel that their work is artistic in nature, Caruso will attempt to accentuate the beauty of their occupation by way of dance vocabulary.  Her goal is to bring together the two art forms in one cohesive and collaborative piece.

The first half of the show will focus on the "organic function of the heart," while the second half will explore the "emotional component."

Joining the dancers, doctors and patients onstage will be live Pittsburgh musicians, Cello Fury

As the dancers rehearse the second half of Act One in the studio, one is not spoon-fed the information.  Rather, the choreographer has interpreted the movement from a more organic and visceral perspective.  Legs bending and lengthening appear to pulse like a beating heart.  Dancers rush in and out of the space as one imagines blood flow.

As the group prepares for its final month of rehearsals, one cannot help but look forward to the finished product.
