So You Think You Can Dance Top 10 B-boy dancer Legacy Perez lived up to his name by nailing almost every routine. He fought hard to make the Top 20 and then went straight through to the Top 10. He began dancing at age 15 after seeing dancers at a local skate park. He is the oldest contestant on the show and shared his life experiences. His ability to express his feelings gave him a huge following early in the season.
Update: Ellenore Scott and Legacy are partners in the Top 8. Ellenore is injured but performs. Link at the bottom.
Legacy and his outstanding contemporary partner Kathryn McCormick were a dream team full of energy, chemistry, showmanship and talent. He was not afraid to show his emotions and broke down during Vegas week after a breakthrough moment with Mia Michaels’ choreography. He cried again before making the Top 10, after he and Kathryn danced a Viennese Waltz. The storyline for the waltz was about a dancer who wasn’t given opportunities to dance until his guardian angel [Kathryn] taught him. Legacy shared, “The piece is very much like my life because it shows that there’s an opportunity and once you’re given it take it or you’ll lose it.”
Week 1: Legacy, Russell Ferguson and Kevin Hunte danced a hip-hop number to “Beggin’ (District 78 Mix) by Madcon choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo. The judges praised all the dancers. In the partnership dance Kathryn and Legacy drew a hip-hop “On & On” by Missy Elliot choreographed by Dave Scott. Dave Scott gave Legacy a chance to showcase his B-boy skills. Kathryn was surprisingly strong and their synchronization was great. It was apparent Legacy and Kathryn had chemistry and the judges gave them great reviews.
Week 2: Legacy and Kathryn drew contemporary with Stacey Tookey using Patti LaBelle’s powerful song “2 Steps Away.” The concept was about a woman struggling with fear. It reminded some fans of Mia Michaels’ “Addiction” piece danced by Kayla and Kupono in Season 5. Legacy had some brilliant skill moves, he was able to show emotion and generous partnering. Judge Adam Shankman remarked, “Stacey Tookey thank you…that was incredibly special and more compellingly there’s something a. your work, but b. something you do in rehearsal that has transformative power. Legacy you’re a different man than I’ve ever seen you before that was a huge step forward. You turned a corner buddy.”
Week 3: Kathryn and Legacy danced a Broadway number “I Wan’na Be Like You (The Monkey Song) by choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler. Although this was a cute routine, Nigel thought Kathryn was “dancing too juvenile.” Legacy was praised.
Week 4: Paso Doble “Pursuit” by Ka choreographed by Tony Meredith. Legacy danced the Paso Doble with strength, masculinity and in character throughout in the dramatic Cirque du Soleil music from Ká. The judges raved about Legacy’s efforts. Referring to Legacy’s work ethic Nigel Lythgoe said, “That passion, that hunger that need for knowledge is going to push you into the Top 10. If you get into the Top 10 it will make me very proud indeed.” Adam Shankman, “You’re no longer a breakdancer. You’re a dancer.”
Week 5: Kathryn and Legacy drew a Sonya Tayeh jazz “So Deep” by Hot Chip. This was a wonderful routine that showcased Legacy’s B-boy style and Kathryn’s beautiful contemporary moves. The judges felt this was one of the best dances of the season. Their second dance was the Viennese Waltz and belonged to Kathryn, but Legacy gave it his all. He needed more time to develop the technique, but they both made it into the SYTYCD Top 10.
