The So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 Top 10 dancers found their magic last night. Jakob Karr, Ellenore Scott, Noelle Marsh made a great showing along with, Kathryn McCormick, B-boy Legacy Perez, krumper Russell Ferguson and Mollee Gray.
Many fans were waiting to see how Mollee Gray and Nathan Trasoras would fair after a rocky few weeks. Mollee’s new partnership with Russell Ferguson proved to be golden. They conquered Mandy Moore’s lyrical jazz to “It Must Have Been Love” by Roxette. This beautifully choreographed piece showcased Mollee’s graceful lines and technical skills. She showed more maturity while Russell continued to impress with his quick study abilities and emotion filled dancing.
However the couple that stole the show was Jakob Karr and Ellenore Scott. Dancing a Sonya Tayeh contemporary piece to “Tore My Heart” by OONA and Dave Tweedie they blew the judges away. Jakob has been so good each week that fans are eager to watch his artistic and theatrical interpretations. His relaxed nature and confidence with new partners and styles impressed. Ellenore was in her element. She and Sonya have a quirky artistic style and she was excited to visit Sonya’s world. The judges and audience gave them a standing O.
Noelle Marsh was outstanding in her hip-hop routine with Ryan Di Lello. Last night she looked like a star. Ryan was a good partner, but his dancing did not stand out as much as Noelle's in their Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo “Give It To Me Right” by Melanie Fiona routine. Their smooth waltz with choreographers JT Thomas and Tomas Mielnicki was beautiful. Noelle captivated the judges and audience.
Perhaps the most unfortunate part of the evening was the underutilization of Legacy’s talent by choreographer Dave Scott. His partner Ashleigh Di Lello and Legacy performed a hip-hop number to “Slow Down” by Bobby Valentino. This routine was too slow and too much time was wasted on Legacy’s cape swirling. Considering all of Legacy’s exciting moves and uniqueness, it was a missed opportunity. Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Adam Shankman gave it lukewarm reviews. This probably hurt Ashleigh more than it did Legacy because his solo received a standing O. Their first number of the evening also had a powerful ending where Legacy did a headstand. He literally rolled back, straightened out his body using his head his arms straight by his side, while Ashleigh grabbed his legs and held him in place.
A bright spot in this competition was Kathryn McCormick who has captured fans’ attention over the last few weeks. She danced beautifully to Spencer Liff’s retro Broadway “Choreography” by Kanny Kaye. She was also elegant in her rumba. Her partner Nathan Trasoras was good in the Broadway number, but did not stand out in the ballroom routine. Mary Murphy complimented some of his technique. His partnership with Kathryn worked better than with Mollee, but was still lacking some chemistry. Nathan’s solo was excellent. He he showcased his technical abilities and cool fusion of styles. SYTYCD is getting more exciting and the dancers are living up to their hype.
