Sam Hurd is definitely the odd man out in the Dallas Cowboys receiving corps. After the Cowboys drafted rookie Dez Bryant the makeup of the Cowboys slightly changed.
One could now say that the Cowboys could have one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. That prediction revolves around Miles Austin having another super year.
But will he? Miles Austin will certainly feel some pressure to duplicate his 2009 season. The kid finally broke out of his shell and shined for the Cowboys, and that makes Sam Hurd even more expendable. Patrick Crayton has demanded a trade even though his position with the Cowboys goes untouched if Roy Williams continues a slump that started the day he put on a Cowboys uniform.
Sam Hurd's contribution to the team is less with his wide receiver abilities and more with his special teams play. He had a team high 19 special team tackles in 2009.
What teams might show interest in Hurd? I think the following teams could use a wide receiver like Hurd:
- St. Louis Rams
- Oakland Raiders
- Cincinnati Bengals
- Seattle Seahawks
Those four teams strike me as possibly the teams that could use a guy like Hurd the most.

why trade him? if in fact roy does have another bad year, miles gets doubled continually, and dez's intelligence does'nt seem to be on par with the nfl game????? we may need him. he's got enough nfl experience now at this point(not a rookie) to have a good season if called upon. we don't have to trade him, and if crayton is traded hurd could be huge for us.
it's a long season. injuries are huge, and depth is really the key to a championship. thats the facts of our 90's teams. we had the best depth. we seem to have that again, so i hope we don't trade it away and deplete it.
Gotta respectfully disagree..It will come down to Crayton and Hurd..The Cowboys will keep Hurd for a couple of reasons..
1..He is making less money than Crayton(big deal to Jerry)
2..He is better at special teams
Crayton was right and he knows he is the odd man out..
yes i agree. money is the factor. and crayton has starting experience, which is a much more appealing offer to another team. we have roy and miles. dez-hurd-and one of those other youngs guys, ogletree, holley, etc... crayton is gone.
would like to see him stay for the simple fact he has been solid on special teams, also for WR depth...i dont think RW will have a great season (hope he does)but i think tony has lost faith in him and wouldnt surprise me if he does not even give him a look, but money will come into play and he probably will be traded.......wish there was a way to keep him
Crayton may make more money but his contract wasn't really that high. I think the Cowboys have enough depth that they can party with Hurd. They need offensive lineman and safeties more.
Well color me wrong..I looked and Hurd and Crayton both signed one year tenders for 1.5 million..so money is not the factor..To me this changes everything if they make a trade..Crayton is more valuable in a trade scenario..Both are on one year tenders..
JJ said on Thursday that there is a real chance they keep six WRers..Last season they kept five..If they keep six they both make the team..Good insurance because RW was kept for $$$ purposes..next season it will cost the Cowboys millions to keep him..He is gone no matter how he plays..
i would'nt call anyone wrong, but did'nt crayton sign like a $7 million 3-4 year deal a couple of years back? i don't think he's on a tender. he maybe on his last year of his contract though? hurd is tendered, which makes sence for jerry to want to keep him. but if he has cash tied to RW, and crayton, well you do the math. roy stays and crayton goes?????not the way some of us see it, but we're not jerry signin the checks
facts are facts. jerry loves RW. he gave draft picks for him. he's from texas, he' big, and has been to the pro-bowl. he does'nt want to look bad for his move in getting him and won't give up on him if he has to tell romo peronally to throw him the damn ball. roy will have a good year and save face for everybody.
I'd rather give up Crayton than Hurd, and even more so I'd give up Williams for both of them. I believe that Hurd can be a great receiver if he would be given game time, just like Austin, in fact before I thought he was better than Austin. I'm not ready to give up on Hurd, and it sucks that no matter what happens a guy like Roy Williams still gets to stay on our team, and these receivers get the boot. Roy Williams better show up!!
he will. jerry jones damn near guarentees it.!!!!
i'm gonna remind you guys only once about stats.....witten; 94 recs-1030 yds-2tds.......2tds..... roy had 7 tds. so what the hell????????? 7 tds is 7 tds. my suggestion is look and look frickin deep. everyone that produces has a place. romo threw 26 tds=1/4 went to roy.....i'll say one more time. WHAT THE HELL BOYS?
i've been a die-hard cowboy fan since the 69-70 season. i remember people bitchin that we kept roger instead of morton. come on people. some of ypu were bitchin on austin before last year and whala....he came thru. now it's all fine and dandy. well when roy comes thru big this year, i'll wait and see who steps up and admits they're wrong. if he does'nt( and i ain't worried he won't) i'll be the first to say i was wrong. but have some damn faith in this organization and the way it's run. jerry's done it before, and i believe he'll pull it off again. there has never been one like jerry in the nfl, and may never be one like him again. we're lucky.
@davedallasfan..Crayton was a restricted free agent..as was Hurd..Jerry put a second round offer on them..If another team signed them they would have to give up a second..
bevomav, without trying to start an arguement, the only 2 wrs that were restricted fas were miles austin who got a 3.17 mil tender that carrys a 1st and 3rd. sam hurd who got a 1.76 mil tender and carried a 2nd. crayton was not a resrtircted fa. he is currently nder contract and his scheduled to make 2 mil base plus incentives like playing time, starts, pro-bowl, etc... this is why it makes more sense to trade crayton because the contract is in place and the experience would render a higher draft pick?
@davedallasfan..Hey I was right once..Got Miles and Crayton totally confused..I looked it up and you are right..According to FoxSports salary guide he is scheduled to count 1.5 mil against the cap..this does not include incentives..
This also answers my questions regarding how a team can offer a tender to a player and then just cut the guy..If a guy signs a tender I thought the team owed him the money..
Now,since PC was under contract I see how they could simply cut him and save the salary..
Sorry for the mess up and you sir were correct..I was wrong..Thanks for straightening me out and making the situation clearer..
We have some promising young receivers that we need to look to the future with. No room on the roster unless we move Hurd and Crayton
Johnson, O-tree, Ryan, etc
Let Hurd and Crayton go to another team that'd be the best thing that could happen, the Cowboys has had all this talent this whole time and always blows it in the playoffs. The Aikman days are over, probably wont see it again (always liked the 49ers better in those days anyways). It also doesn't help any when they take away from there offensive line, trade all that they traded for Roy Williams, and also trade up in the draft to take Dez Bryant when they really dont need no more WR's. If they're stupid enough to do that than with that kind of IQ yeah you'll see them get rid of Hurd and Crayton if not some others. Im not a Cowboy fan but If I was i'd be discusted, im a fan of alot of teams, this isn't one of them. I just hope Crayton and Hurd goes to a team that welcomes them and can use them such as a losing team thats trying to improve such as the Rams. If its not Romo screwing up on a field goal like in the Seahawk game they're getting blowed out of the water like they did against the Vikings. That kind of talent you shouldn't see that, I mean come on. Thats the 20th century Americas Team for you (LOSERS). Oh yeah and they also need to come out with a new kind of jersey, a jersey that says GOATROPERS written real big on the front of them lol. Jerry Jones might need to try to buy a rodeo, he'd probably be able to run it better than the way he runs this team.
Got something to say?
