There is a reason Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently addressed the team to warn them not to get too cocky with the 8-3 record and first place in the NFC East.
Jones sees the potential this year's Cowboys have, so the warning was at a perfect time. Jones has seen his Cowboys stink in almost every December since 1999, a span in which the Cowboys are 17-29.
The schedule is the toughest yet, with games against the Giants, Chargers and Saints.
The Redskins and Eagles are the other two games left on the schedule.
If the Cowboys take one game at a time, then there is a chance to pull of a spectacular December.
First off, the defense is quickly becoming a force. DeMarcus Ware has gained his full strength back and Anthony Spencer is starting to make solid plays on the opposite side of the ball. Keith Brookings was a very smart free agent grab, and Mike Jenkins has played some great corner.
“Mike Jenkins is hard to throw against,” Phillips said. “He jams them up well. Our pass defense has been good because we've been able to count on him.”
Sounds like a recipe to the playoffs, right?
Not so fast. The Cowboys offense has been inconsistent, sometimes on the extreme ends of both sides, The offense can sputter and have a difficult time finding the end zone, and even a field goal. And then other things they rack up more than 400 yards and score four touchdowns.
To win, the offense needs to find its stride and the finish line is within reach.
There is no team in the NFL that has the backfield threats we have with the Three-Headed Monster of Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Anyone of those guys is capable of exploding.
At 8-3, the Cowboys need to win 3 more games to secure a playoff spot.
Apparently, the Cowboys are very eager for this rematch against the Giants next Sunday. The Week 2 33-31 loss is still leaving a bitter taste.
The Cowboys gave up six plays of more than 20 yards. Do you see them doing it next week?
