On a gorgeous Sunday that brought throngs of bike riders out for various events, including the annual Transportation Alternatives Century, about 30 members of the New York Cycle Club (NYCC) did their part yesterday to keep New York beautiful.
The club has adopted one mile of Route 9W just north of the New Jersey line near Piermont, a favorite route of cyclists from all over the New York region.
Thus, in return for getting its name on a sign on 9W, the club organized several A, B and C level rides starting from Manhattan going to that particular mile. There, Vice President of Rides Betsy Hafkin handed out big garbage bags and sanitary gloves, and the members spent time picking up trash on both sides of the road.
"I'm very happy and would call the ride a huge success," said Hafkin afterward. It was a perfect morning for the cleanup, with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. A few motorists on the road did shout "Thanks" to the cleanup crew.
