The Encino Velodrome, open since 1961, has been a longstanding community landmark in Southern California. It is the only outdoor track cycling arena in the west San Fernando Valley and it draws cyclists of all levels to compete annually. The velodrome’s banked, cement track is impressive and was constructed by four longtime friends and cyclists, George Garner, Bob Hansing, Jake Kemp and Charlie Morton. The history behind the track is intriguing, as it involves the love of cycling, track racing and four friends bringing one great idea to fruition together..jpg)
The Encino Velodrome underwent renovations in 2002 and currently offers many training sessions for cyclists of all levels, including beginners. There are training programs for skilled riders, youths and juniors, and Ladies Only Track Sessions (LOTS) offered the first Saturday of every month. For a list of these programs, please visit the Training Schedule on the Encino Velodrome website.
In addition to training, there is the excitement of the races that take place throughout the year. Currently, several events are planned for the end of May, and the Juniors, Masters and Elite Championships pick up speed during the second week of June. The Racing Schedule is continuously updated on the website. You should come check it out, as these races really demonstrate the unique bike handling skills of a seasoned track racer!
The velodrome is supported by loyal volunteers and generous donations. This Friday, May 22nd, is another chance to support this arena and keep it open for generations of cyclists to come. On Fundraising Fridays, the organizers hope to get the word out about the need for donations. For a small amount, you can become a “supporter” or “friend” of the Encino Velodrome, and for a bit more, you can be a “Hall of Famer!” For those businesses who would like an opportunity to advertise, you may purchase a painted advertisement in one turn of the velodrome with your company logo and sponsorship acknowledgement on all of their printed materials (race flyers, etc.) throughout the season.
