One of the greatest things about cycling is the ability to see beautiful areas while exercising. If you've never left Gilbert, AZ to ride, think about participating in the Saturday, Oct. 30th Tour de Safford. A beautiful area located in southeastern Arizona, Safford is a small, rural town with rugged mountain backdrops, rolling hills that we Phoenicians have to hunt for to ride and acres of farmland majestically carpeting wide areas of riding.

The route options being offered on this first-ever bike ride benefiting Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center are 104 miles, 69 miles and 33 miles. Those choosing the 104-mile route will traverse through downtown Safford, Solomon, the Black Hills of Greenlee County, Duncan and just beside Ash Peak before ending at the Safford Regional Airport. The fee to register is $60. If you are preparing for the Tour de Scottsdale on Oct. 3, the 70-mile ride would serve as a great warm-up ride for this century just four weeks later.

The tour is part of the Mount Graham Regional Medical Center Foundation's annual Healthraiser's Event. Besides the tour, the event offers a 1/2 Marathon, Classic Car Show, Poker Run, Motorcycle Show and Airplane Exhibition along with live music throughout the day. Family and friends of riders are welcome to enjoy the other events while waiting for their rider to return. Admission to the entire Healthraisers event is $5. Food vendors will also be on hand providing a light breakfast for those who arrive early and then a full lunch menu later in the day.

Cyclists and their families can arrange to make a weekend of by visiting the Graham County Chamber of Commerce website for information on lodging and restaurants.
