Scott Denney, a local cycling event promoter, knows how to put things into context; cycling is about challenging yourself. But, at the regional level, it's not always to be taken too seriously. His flagship event, Son of Godzulla, is a celebration of Ohio cycling's toughest climbs. And, it's also a celebration of the end of the season. That means it's time to party!
Held on October 17th, Son of Godzulla is the last road event of the year. And, starting/finishing from Moscow, OH, it features some eye-popping climbs of 20% grade. What makes this worth all the effort and pain? All proceeds from registration benefit the SW Ohio Cyclist Kick Back, Pig Out and Drink Foundation.
Speaking of pig out...after you complete the full 72 mile non-sanctioned suffer-fest, including the stand-and-grunt finishing stretch, you will be offered the opportunity to join the post-race party and toss a pig head. It's one of the large variety of goofy and fun post-race Olympic-style events. Scott and his crew also lay out a very lavish post-race refueling spread which includes many "experimental" foods and drinks. Last year, chicken feet were spotted...
The event attracts all sorts of riders, including hardcore racers, experienced tourists, tandems and fixed-gear riders.
But don't be steered wrong by the event's somewhat whimsical angle. Many strong riders show up for this one in hopes to put one final beat-down on the large 100+ bike peleton. Former Jelly Belly pro Kirk Albers is a semi-regular.
