CHP year end crackdown on driving and mobile phone use achieves compliance

SACRAMENTO -- Officer Adrian Quintero, with the California Highway Patrol Valley Division in Rancho Cordova, is well pleased with the driving and mobile phone use zero tolerance day last month Dec. 30 and 31.

“Our goal was simple,” Quintero said, “we just wanted to raise awareness of and achieve compliance with the no driving and mobile phone use law in California, and for the most part we found people taking responsibility.”

The crackdown on driving and mobile phone use resulted in 111 citations issued for violating California’s cell phone laws and four citations to individuals who were texting while driving. The fines for a first offense can cost as much as $159.

“One young woman was texting while steering with her knees,” Quintero said.

The distracted driving campaigns implemented by the CHP are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Quintero said there were about six or seven campaigns scheduled through Sept. 2012.

According to Quintero, the cyber technology offers great efficiencies for many things, but certainly makes driving more difficult for people of all ages. “Citations were issued to a wide range of people in age from teenagers to mature adults, “ Quintero said, “We want people to understand that this technology is a double edged sword and regulating yourself is the safest way to go especially because the kids are watching.”
