Cyberbullying sounds like something out of a science fiction movie but it is a reality and it is affecting many teens and children today. While its a relatively new term for some, many parents have been horrified by the news reports of a child committing suicide as a result of cyberbullying yet still conceive of it as isolated incidents that occur "somewhere else." The truth is that cyberbullying occurs more frequently and closer to home than believed. This is confirmed by reports from local news outlets such as Memphis Fox News, The Commercial Appeal, and Action News 5

In a recent survey conducted by iSafe, an organization dedicated to internet safety education, more than half of children reported having hurtful things sent to them while online and 42% admitted to being bullied online.

Cyberbullying can vary widely, from impolite comments posted online to blast sites, websites constructed with the sole purpose of embarassing or harassing someone. They can also become criminal matters, especially when the attacker begins to use another child's personal information. Many states, like Tennessee, have laws governing harassment and even electronic harassment.

Cyberbullying is a problem and it is one that needs to be addressed through awareness and education. Children need to be educated not only to the dangers they face and how to avoid them but also to the effects that such offensive behavior can have on others.

Children and teens need to be told, that in no uncertain terms, bullying in any form will not be tolerated. This is to include cyberbullying. They also need to be assured that it is safe to talk to their parents if they, or one of their friends or classmates, are being harassed while online. Much like traditional bullying, reducing the potential harm produced by cyberbullying will take a concerted effort on the part of parents, educators and students.
