A native of Buffalo, New York, Sara Marie Ries graduated last year from the master of fine arts program at Chatham University in Pittsburgh where she also obtained the Best Thesis in Poetry Award.
Winner of the Stevens Poetry Manuscript Competition sponsored by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Ries is celebrating the unveiling of her first book of poetry Come In, We're Open this month. Her book features poems concerning blue-collar topics ranging from her waitressing job at her family-owned diner, Woodlawn Diner, to specific portraits of working-class men and women she has encountered.
Published by National Federation of State Poetry Societies Press, the book will be launched on June 19th from 7-10 pm at the said diner in which Ries grew up and continues to run a reading series she calls Poetry and Dinner Nights. When available, the book can be purchased through the press (isbn # 978-0-9824470-1-7) and cost thirteen dollars.
