When former USC defensive Taylor Mays clocked a 4.24-second 40 time this morning, NFL combine officials were ready to log a record-tying time in the famous sprint. That all changed when result was officially adjusted to 4.43 seconds.
Mays' first time was the talk of scouts and the speed of Mays was huge news online. Now, as officials are moving forward with the new time of 4.43, analysts are saying both times were wrong.
Gregg Rosenthal of Pro Football Talk, said Tuesday, March 2, reps at the NFL Network clocked Mays about a step behind Clemson receiver Jacoby Ford, who ran the dash in 4.28 seconds. According to insiders at NFL Network, producers played sprints of Ford and Mays side-by-side dispelling perhaps both results.
Mays' new time is still the best among defensive backs in the combine. The time of 4.24 would have tied a combine record set by TennesseeTitan Chris Johnson in 2008.
