TONIGHT: Artomatic Kicks off Its 10th Year

Artomatic is back for its 10th year—this time it will be housed in Southeast DC near the Navy Yard metro stop. For those who associate  art with pristine museums, know tha this showcase for local artists is anything but stuffy. It's continued popularity is a testament to its accessibiltiy. More than 50,000 visitors are expected for the event this time around. If you have never been, Artomatic, it is a multi-floor art experience that usually moves to a different part of the city each year.  The variety of art is amazing, and as you move from room to room, you will continue to find interesting pieces and artists who use unexpected materials.

Participating artists pay a fee and donate time to help with overall event administration, but it is free to the public. Artomatic gives artists an opportunity to show their stuff in a well-trafficked public venue. If you see something you like, you can contact the artist (if they are not present at the time) to ask about purchasing it. This year more than 1000 artists are expected.

Performance is also a part of Artomatic and you can check out the Artomatic Event calendar to see who will be performing when--there are film screenings, childrens events and music in various genres. The kickoff for this year’s Artomatic will be tonight (May 29, 2009) and will feature music and performances.

If you didn't know, PostSecret got its start at Artomatic, so you never know—it may be a chance to meet a local artist and see their work up close before they make it big.
