The Wall is one of the most influential and thought provoking albums in the history of music! Roger Waters wrote The Wall 30 years ago, and what led him to do The Wall again is really significant to what’s happening in the world today! Roger Waters said “The new production of The Wall is my attempt to draw some comparisons to illuminate our current predicament and is dedicated to all the innocent lost in the intervening years. I feel it is my responsibility as an artist to express my optimism and encourage others to do the same. To quote the great man, “You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one”. Quoting himself from something he said 22 years ago Waters also said “What it comes down to for me is this: Will the technologies of communication in our culture serve to enlighten us and help us to understand one another better or will they deceive us and keep us apart? I believe this is still a relevant question and the jury is out. We just have to keep blogging, keep twittering, keep communicating, keep sharing ideas.”
Roger Waters words filled my thoughts as I arrived at the Honda Center, walked down the loading dock ramp, back stage, past the roadies, under the stage. The experience was surreal and reminiscent of the movie “Almost Famous”.
Roger Waters played 52 shows on the tour, this one was the last one in the states. Thousands of people poured into the stadium, excitement and energy bounced through the air, flowing from one person to the next. My 13th row center seat provided me with a pheonomenal view of the stage!
The show literally started off with a bang! The sound of gunfire coming from every direction, pyrotechnics exploding across the entire stage, a prop airplane flew over the audience, crashed into “The Wall” on stage & burst into flames. Now that’s the way to make an entrance! The show grabbed everyones’ attention right from the start & held it for EVERY second right until it was over!
What a ride! Roger Waters takes performance art to new heights, while brilliantly utilizing every creative medium (photography, video, words, music, lyrics, life, props, puppets and more) to convey his message. Waters told his story from 30 years ago with a new outlook, reflecting on topics pertaining to similar issues we are facing today. The journey was stimulating in every way imaginable, and everyone in the stadium felt it! The mood was uplifting, continually throughout the show! Thousands of people sang along to every song, word for word, clapping their hands, and dancing in their seats to favorites like “Another Brick In The Wall”, “Comfortably Numb”, “Mother” and more!
The “Fallen Loved Ones” images shown throughout the show as an act of remembrance for lost loved ones, was deeply moving! Roger Waters sent out a request through his website for photo submissions and details of lost loved ones to be included in the live show on The Wall.
