Thankfully, mid-week rain and weekend temps into the low-50s should wash away lingering snow and ice, giving Kansas Citians a welcomed respite after a month of brutal arctic weather. Here's some events to think about attending.

  • Thursday—January 21

Pickup on South Street , Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, free
This 1953 film classic with Richard Widmark and Thelma Ritter displays all the requisite noir elements: angular black and white cinematography, a sax-filled soundtrack, and a cast of ex-cons and floosies. It’s part of the library’s City in Darkness: A Film Noir Series, and shows at 6 p.m. in the main library’s 2nd floor auditorium. 625 Minnesota Ave. Kansas City, KS. (913) 551-3280

  • Friday—January 22

Around the World in 80 Days, Kansas City Repertory Theater
The Rep, coming off its holiday musical hit, A Christmas Story, now brings us Jules Verne’s immortal tale of adventure. Be prepared for a lot of “how’d they do that?” moments as the intrepid duo of Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout globetrot onstage. Previews begin today for an official opening next week. Kansas City Rep’s Spencer Theatre, UMKC campus. (816) 235-2700

  • Saturday—January 23

Winter Ice Fest Ice Carving Contest , Crown Center, free to view
To reminder us we still have a few more months of winter remaining, area chefs and culinary students come to Crown Center to carve works of art out of giant ice blocks. Winners receive a cash prize and get their handiwork displayed in the Hyatt Crown Center’s Ballroom Foyer. Starts at noon in the Crown Center Square. 2450 Grand Blvd, KCMO. (816) 274-8444

Coincidentally, the Kansas City, MO Public Library is also programming a film noir series, this one focusing on films either written or inspired by the works of crime master Raymond Chandler. Marlowe is based on a lesser-known Chandler work, and stars James Garner and an early film appearance by martial arts legend Bruce Lee. 1:30 p.m. in the Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. KCMO. (816) 701-3400

  • Sunday—January 24

A Dozen Things I Want to do on Stage, Fishtank Performance Studio, $5-15
Performer Rebecca Nagle will be pushing the boundaries of her art in a cabaret show cum performance art piece, currently on a 15-city tour. The 12 things referred to in the title include such disparate elements as contortion, poetry readings, and even a disembowelment (!) Local burlesquer Susanna Lee, aka Lucky DeLuxe, opens. 8 p.m. 1715 Wyandotte St., KCMO. (816) 809-7110

  • Monday—January 25

Strangers on a Train, Kansas City Public Library, free
The Library’s Chandler series continues tonight with one of Hitchcock’s best. Ironically, Chandler’s treatment of the Patricia Highsmith novel was rejected by Hitchcock, though Chandler was still given screen credit. 6:30 p.m. in the Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., KCMO. (816) 701-3400
