Irvington Halloween Street Festival a cool, cool success

The street fair portion of the 63rd annual Irvington Halloween Festival (Indianapolis’ oldest Halloween festival) was a cool, cool success. It was a great time for those that attended the day-long event, beautiful and sunny, but cool --- as in temperature --- it was definitely chilly.

Most attendees dressed appropriately, except for the brave few.

One estimate put the attendance between 3,000 and 6,000.

Washington Street (old U.S. 40 / the National Road) was closed off to vehicular traffic between Ritter and Bolton Avenues. There were booths lining both sides of Washington Street, staffed by local artists and artisans as well as booths staffed by Irvington businesses. The addition of booths by larger, commercial companies, along with the many, different types of food booths, seemed to give the festival an air of a county fair.

Live music was provided by Lazy Daze Coffee House (across the street and on the outdoor deck) and at a stage set up on the north side of the library. Laze Daze featured Donn Smith followed by Hank Haggard. The stage by the library featured many younger musicians (individuals and bands).

The Street Fair culminated with a grand parade down Washington Street, led by a color guard and an Indianapolis Fire Department tanker truck. The parade included literally hundreds of those in costume and the 2009 Miss Irvington Halloween Festival Queen, Jennifer Constantine (with Natalie Warner and Anna Preuschl, first and second runners up respectively).
