Top ten things to do in Detroit

There are tons of things to do in Detroit – especially in the summer. So if the economy is forcing you to take a stay-cation or you just want to enjoy the city more, this Top Ten guide is for you.

  1. Get gourmet take-out from Dish Restaurant on Detroit’s eastside and take a picnic to Belle Isle.
  2. Spend Saturday morning at the Eastern Market. There are flowers, fresh produce, and loads of local entertainment from karaoke singers at Bert’s Marketplace.
  3. Go shopping at Spiral Collective on Cass at Willis in Midtown. Get your hair done at Curl Up and Dye and grab a snack from Avalon Bakery.
  4. Walk, bike or jog the Dequindre Cut. Commune with other exercisers and enjoy a Greenway in the midst of urban bustle.
  5. Be cool, lay back and listen to jazz at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge or Cliff Bells.
  6. Ride through some of Detroit’s Historic neighborhoods like Palmer Woods, Indian Village or Boston Edison and appreciate the great architecture.
  7. Listen to spoken word at one of the many spots around town. If you visit the Echoverse Poetry Series at 1515 Broadway, you will hear all types of poetry.
  8. Enjoy a concert at Chene Park and then head over to Mosaic Restaurant in Greektown for a fine meal – or vice versa.
  9. Save the date for the 27th Annual African World Festival (AWF) on Hart Plaza from August 14 until August 16. In the meantime, visit the AWF’s sponsor museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History.
  10. Chill out on the Detroit Riverwalk and get a little water therapy. Make sure to ride the carousel!

This short list of ten items should give you some good ideas, but so many venues and events have been left out. Here’s your turn to join the conversation. Leave your suggestions about great things to do in Detroit in the comment section that follows this article. Happy Detroiting!

The EchoVerse Poetry and Slam Series is also the home of the Detroit Slam Team, all kinds of poetry, great folk and positive energy. I strongly recommend everyone experience it.

The EchoVerse Poetry Series sounds like the next spot I'll try. I enjoy the all day jazz festival in September. It's a great way to become familiar with new artists and to enjoy some of the older favorites. There is great food and the different stages create a number of choices.

I'm a baseball fan, so I love going to Comerica park for a Tiger game. I've also enjoyed concerts at the Fox Theater and Plays at the Music Hall. Hart Plaza (summer festivals) is my all time favorite for free venues.

Detroit is where the action is at. From the pulse of the people to the live entertainment at places like the Fox Theater and Motor City Casino, it truly is the heart of Michigan. Whether you are a fan of sports (Joe Louis Arena, Comerica Park), culture (numerous festivals and museums to choose from) or recreation (Autorama) Detroit has something for everyone.

Yes, DISH is the best gourmet carry-out ever! Enjoy the latest books and lovely architecture from the downtown branch of the Detroit Public Library... have you exercised your library card lately? What about fresh Saturday morning bread from Avalon Bakery? Some delicious vegetarian fare from the Traffic Jam & Snug? All of the great theatre productions right downtown at Wayne State? We have a lovely city!

Another great place for good national and local jazz, good food, and great atmosphere is the Jazz Cafe' inside the Detroit Music Hall on Madison.

I love these suggestions. I have frequented many of these venues, some more recently than others, but it is nice to know that there is so much to do right here in Detroit.
