The Shoot Out 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival Boulder
The Shoot Out 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival Boulder with the support of the Boulder Arts Commission is excited to announce a series of pre-Shoot Out workshops again. These events are designed to help prepare the filmmakers for The Shoot Out Boulder which will occur on September 25-27, 2009.
Michael Conti, Executive Director of The Shoot Out Boulder explains, “While attending a workshop doesn’t guarantee you will win, it does give you a firmer foundation on what is possible within the limitations imposed with a better chance of having your film seen. What do you have to lose? "
The Shoot Out Boulder asks filmmakers to trust their courage, imagination and determination by making a 7-minute film in just 24 hours. The challenge and skill involved becomes evident with the list of required technical, material, and timing 'rules' for creating the films.
The process is simple. Each film can be no longer than 7 minutes in length (including credits) and must be edited in-camera and returned to the event organizers no later than 24 hours after the start of the event. All films must include 5 of the eleven items announced at the start of the event in The Brief. All films are then judged to find the Top 10 Films. The results will be announced at the Gala Screening Event held at the Boulder Theater on Sunday, September 27th, 1pm - 3 pm.
Editing in-camera means that films must be shot in sequence, i.e. produced in a linear fashion (no editing). The filmmaking teams may rewind tape, preview and tape over what was last shot. Teams may not edit i.e. you can not use an editing suite, any method that views it through a monitor or by connecting several cameras or VTRs together or use of a computer or any other technology other than one camera used to shoot the video/film. This also means you can not use camera's internal memory sticks nor can you reorder your scenes using any memory or DVDR functions that the camera may have. You may only record onto tape i.e. MiniDV, even if the camera has an internal hard drive.
The challenge and skill involved becomes evident with the list of required technical, material, and timing 'rules' for creating the films. "However courage isn't always enough, so we have found that the more we can provide to participants prior to the event in terms of knowledge and best practices, the better off everyone will be in terms of actually completing the event and getting their film into the competition," said Conti.
The Shoot Out Boulder's day long workshops will inspire filmmakers to make a fast film while teaching them the methodology of successful short-form storytelling, lighting, directing, and in-camera editing. Special emphasis will be paid to The Shoot Out’s official format and requirements.
The workshops are a great way to help filmmakers find their vision, learn problem solving skills, and meet new friends. After this event, participants should have a head-start on preparing for the upcoming Shoot Out.

Here is an example of a top 24 hour film from a past Shoot Out:
Aria Next Door is a film made for the Shoot Out Boulder, 2007. It is an award winning comedy made in 24 hours. This film was directed by Brad Stabio and produced by the Cinema Geeks and starred Kirk Anderson, Meghan McMahon, & Jordan Leigh. The rules were to make the film in 24 hours, no editing is allowed, meaning it's all in-camera, and use 5 of the 11 items provided to you at the start of the competition. The items needing to be in the film were, 1. a person with red hair 2. hanging items up to dry 3. an energy efficient light bulb (the squiggly ones) 4. the line "How about them Rockies" 5. A particular set of benches in Boulder. This team won Best Picture, Audience Favorite, Best In-Camera Editing, and Best Sound.
The Shoot Out Boulder folks will be at the Boulder Farmers Market, Saturday, September 5 & 12, with a free screening of some Top 10 Films between 8-11 am. They will also be at their community table until 2 pm. They invite you to get your latte and fresh veggies and say hello!
