The movie star, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa or Hiroyuki Tagawa ,as he now prefers, is back on the screen, in the scene and staying centered. Earthly movie stars of Hollywood are the same as stars in the sky because they appear and disappear and appear again. In their initial orbits, they sparkle and shine their newly discovered talents and good looks and light up the night. Tagawa is strikingly handsome and unwittingly lives up to the description of being “dangerously sexy,” even today at a proud 59.  His orbit allowed him to shine all along his path one of almost 80 films to date. Among them Bertolucci’s Oscar Winner The Last Emperor;  the James Bond film License to Kill; Snow Falling on Cedars, Pearl Harbor; Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes; Memoirs of a Geisha; Mortal Kombat in which—well everyone knows—he  was the shape-shifting sorcerer, Shang Tsung;  the list continues.

Hiroyuki  is widely known to be a light-hearted man who walks with the valiant elegance of a tiger and speaks with the relaxed ease of a monk.

In fact, in Honolulu, Hiroyuki Tagawa is a much-adored figure who strives to share what he knows, teaching in a wide variety of venues from the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he has conducted Masters Classes in “The art of Acting” to schools where he has taught small groups of students..

He knows his strength, and he is careful to use it for good.  Even one of his website's begins “HEART, HUMILITY, HONOR.” Hiroyuki has used his long six decades of life to  take his own inventory, to stop for introspection and do personal work, perhaps on some unresolved issues mentioned on his page such as “Struggling with the personal conflict resulting from his awareness of the larger world.” So many people both want and need to do this, but they do not. These are the individuals that continue to paths of escalating negativity, some of whom are the stars that burn out, collapse, implode or simply fall out of their orbits. Not Hiroyuki! He is a positive force, a peace activist, a spiritual being.

In the near future of course, we will be treated to more of Hiroyuki. Earlier this year, he finished TEKKEN, the film, and in 2011, he stars in DUAL OF THE LEGENDS.

Perhaps because of a few of his films, Hiroyuki is sometimes remembered as the guy killing everyone, but that is just make believe. In real life, he has been developing Chuu Shin, a unique philosophical approach to martial arts with the focus on arts. Chuu Shin primarily centers on developing the inner state and spirituality of the practitioner rather than on the physical movements of fighting. The purpose of the exercises of Chuu Shin is to release the energy centers within, creating a harmony between mind and body.

Chuu Shin and introspection seem to have worked for Hiroyuki. Newly centered he is more ready than ever for his craft. He has acted in some fourteen roles in the last two years which has kept him busy criss crossing the globe. However, he still finds time to teach. He even conducted a Master’s workshop at the “Molodist” Film Festival in Kiev this past October. Projects going on in 2009 include: Tayna Chingis Khaana; The Legend of Chang Apana; Hachiki, a Dog’s Story with Richard Gere due out next month and in the spring of 2010 Tekken and Duel of Legends. Certainly there are many more to come. If you like to star gaze, Hiroyuki Tagawa is one to watch; a martial artist, a spiritual teacher and now an eternal star who is coming around again with even more luminosity than before.
